Soundarya Lahari - Part 3

The power of attracting every one and making everyone happy 

tatil laekhaa tanweem tapana sasi vaiswaanaramayeem
nishannaam shannaam apy upari kamalaanaam tava kalaam
mahaa padma atavyaam mridi tamalamaayaena manasaa
mahaantah pasyanto dadhati parama ahlaada lahareem. 21

மின்னல் கொடி போன்ற வடிவம் - ஸர்வ வசீகரம்

தடில்லேகா தன்வீம் தபன சசி வைஷ்வானர மயீம்
நிஷண்ணாம் ஷண்ணாமப்யுபரி கமலானாம் தவ கலாம்
மஹாபத்மாடவ்யாம் ம்ருதித மலமாயேன மனஸா
மஹாந்த: பச்யந்தோ தததி பரமாஹ்லாத லஹரீம்I [21]

O! Mother, Thy forms fascinating like a streak of lightning, and with the glory of the Sun, Moon and Fire. Great evolved souls perceive and contemplate Theen their minds, with esteem as the Sadakhya kala or Bindu Roopam seatedn the great lotus forest (the sahasrara), above the six yogic chakras and thus they possess unending supreme joy. 21

Getting of all powers 

bhavaani tavam daasae mayi vitara drushtim sakarunaam
iti stotum vaanchan kathayati bhavaani twamtiyah
tadaiva twam tasmai disasi nija saayujya padaveem
mukunda brahmaendra sphuta makuta neeraajita padaam. 22

ஸர்வ ஸித்தி

பவானி த்வம் தாஸே மயி விதர த்ருஷ்டிம் ஸகருணாம்
இதி ஸ்தோதும் வாஞ்சன் கதயதி பவானி த்வமிதி ய:
ததைவ த்வம் தஸ்மை திசஸி நிஜஸாயுஜ்ய பதவீம்
முகுந்த ப்ரஹ்மேந்த்ர ஸ்புட மகுட நீராஜித பதாம்I [22]

O! Bhavani! The very moment one surrenders to you saying – “I am your slave, bestow Thy compassionate look on me”, You grant him, before he completes that sentence, the perpetual state of absorptionn Thee at Thy feet. Aren’ t your feet glittering with the twinkles from the precious stonesn the bright diadems (kireetas) of Mukunda, Brahma, andndra? 22

All round prosperity 

twayaa hritwaa vaamam vapu ripari truptaena manasaa
sareera artham sambhor aparam api sanko hritam abhoot
yadaetat twad roopam sakalam arunaabhan trinayanam
kuchaabhyaam aanamram kutila sasi choodaala makutam. 23

"சக்தியிடம் சிவாம்சத்தின் அடக்கம்" [ஸர்வ ஸம்பத்து] 

த்வயா ஹ்ருத்வா வாமம் வபு-ரபரித்ருப்தேன மனஸா
சரீராத்தம் சம்போ-ரபரமபி சங்கே ஹ்ருதமபூத்
யதேதத் த்வத்ரூபம் ஸகல-மருணாபம் த்ரிநயனம்
குசாப்யா-மாநம்ரம் குடில-சசி-சூடால-மகுடம்

O! Mother!magine, you might have taken over the right half too of the persona of the Lord Siva, perhaps being discontented to be onlyn his left half. That must be the reason for your entirely red, scintillating appearance with the three eyes, shaped bosom and curved body and the crown crested by the moon crescent. 23
Relief from the fear of Bhoothas, Prethas and Pishachas 


jagat sootae dhaataa harir avati rudrah kshapayatae
tiraskurwann aetat swam api vapureesa stirayati
sadaa poorwas sarwam tadda manugrihnaati cha sivah
tava ajnaam aalambya kshana chalitayor bhroo latikayoh. 24

 "தேவியின் புருவ அமைப்பு' [ஸர்வ பூத ப்ரேத பிசாச பய நிவாரணம்] 

ஜகத் ஸூதே தாதா ஹரி-ரவதி ருத்ர: க்ஷபயதே
திரஸ்குர்வன்-னேதத் ஸ்வமபி வபு-ரீசஸ்-திரயதி
ஸதா பூர்வ: ஸர்வம் ததித-மனுக்ருஹ்ணாதி ச சிவஸ்
தவாஜ்ஞா மாலப்ய க்ஷண சலிதயோர்-ப்ரூலதிகயோ:


O! Mother! Dhata (Brahma) begets the world. Hari protectst. Rudra destroyst. Eswara withdraws them (Dhata, Hari and Rudra), at willnto Him and obscures even his own body (by mergingnto Sadasiva).ndeed Siva (whose name)s preceded by (the word) Sada, obligesn all this, based upon Thy order, granted to Him by the momentary movement of your eye-brows. 24

Getting higher posts and power 

trayaanaam daevaanaam triguna janitaanaam tava sivae
bhavaet poojaa poojaa tava charanayor yaa virachitaa
tathaahi twaat paadod wahana mani peethasya nikatae
sthitaahy aetae saswan mukulita karottam samakutaah. 25

"தேவியின் பூஜையில் மும்மூர்த்தி பூஜை அடக்கம்"  [உன்னதப்பதவியும் அதிகாரமும் பெற] 

த்ரயாணாம் தேவானாம் த்ரிகுண-ஜநிதானாம் தவ சிவே
பவேத் பூஜா பூஜா தவ சரணயோர்-யா விரசிதா
ததா ஹி த்வத் பாதோத்வஹன மணிபீடஸ்ய நிகடே
ஸ்திதா ஹ்யேதே சச்வன்-முகுலித-கரோத்தம்ஸ-மகுடா:I

O! Sivaani! That homage made to Thy feets verily the homage made to the Trinity (three gods) born of Thy three powers or Gunas. Thissndeed true and appropriate, for, the Trinity, with their folded hands held together on their fore- heads, always adore Thee with their crowns touching the gem studded foot rest of yours. 25

Destruction of internal and external enemies  

virincih panchatwam vrajati harir aapnoti viratim
vinaasam keenaaso bhajati dhanado yaati nidhanam
vitandree maahaendree vitatir api sammeelita drisaa
mahaa samhaarae asmin viharati sati twat patir asou. 26

"பராசக்தியின் பாதிவ்ரத்ய மகிமை"  [அகத்திலும், புறத்திலும் சத்ருக்களின் அழிவு]

விரிஞ்சி: பஞ்சத்வம் வ்ரஜதி ஹரிராப்னோதி விரதிம்
வினாசம் கீனாசோ பஜதி தனதோ யாதி நிதனம்
விதந்த்ரீ மாஹேந்த்ரீ விததிரபி ஸம்மீலித த்ருசா
மஹா ஸம்ஹாரே அஸ்மின் விஹரதி ஸதி த்வத்பதி ரஸௌI

O! Mother! Virinchi embraces death. Hari becomesnactive. Kinaasa (Yama) tastes destruction. Dhanada (Kubera) proceeds to death. The group ofndras (14 Manus and 14ndras)s alson deep sleep (death) with eyes closed. Oh Sati!n this great universal destruction, Thy husband (Sadasiva) continues to sport (in Thy company). 26

 Self-realisation and Athma jnanam 

japo jalpas silpam sakalam api mudraa virachanaa
gatih praadakshinya kramanam asanaadya ahuti vidhih
pranaamas samvaesas sukham akhilam aatmaarpana drisaa
saparyaa paryaayas tava bhavatu yan mae vilasitam. 27

"ஸமயாசார மானஸிக பூஜை" [ஆத்மஞான சித்தி]

ஜபோ ஜல்ப:சில்பம் ஸகலமபி முத்ராவிரசனா
கதி: ப்ராதக்ஷிண்ய-க்ரமண-மசனத்யாஹுதி-விதி:
ப்ரணாம: ஸம்வேச: ஸுகமகில-மாத்மார்ப்பண-த்ருசா
சபர்யா-பர்யாயஸ்-தவ பவது யன்மே விலஸிதம்I

O! Mother! Let my speech be Thy prayers, and all manual tasks do, be the symbolic arrangement of fingersn Thy worship, let my gait be the steps of circumambulation of Thee, let my food etc. be the oblations offered to Thee, let my silencen sleep be Thy salutation, let all thats happily manifestedn me be synonymous with Thy worship - from the point of view of offering myself (in your worship). 27

Fear of poison & avoidance of untimely death

sudhaam apy aaswaadya pratibhaya jaraa mrityu harineem
vipadyantae viswae vidhi sata makha mukhaadyaa divishadah
karaalam yat kshwaelam kabalitavatah kaala kalanaa
na sambhos tanmoolam tava janani taatanka mahimaa.

 "தேவியின் தாடங்க மகிமை"  [விஷபயம், அகாலம்ருத்யு நிவாரணம்] 

சுதா மப்யாச்வத்ய ப்ரதிபய-ஜராம்ருத்யு-ஹரிணீம்
விபத்யந்தே விச்வே விதி-சதமகாத்யா திவிஷத:
கராலம் யத் ஷ்வேலம் கபலிதவத: காலகலனா
ந சம்போஸ் தன் மூலம் தவ ஜனனி தாடங்க-மஹிமா

O! Mother! The Brahma,ndra and other celebrities of the heaven, though they have taken themmortal fluid, Amrita, whichs supposed to remove the fearful old age (and) death, perish at the time of Pralaya (total dissolution). But, Sambhu, though he consumed the dreadful poison (Kala koota visham)s not affected even the least by the all devouring Time.sn’ tt because of the greatness of your earrings! 28

To avoid miscarriages, to tame rude people 

kireetam vairincham parihara purah kaitabha bhidah
kathorae koteerae skhalasi jahi jambhaari makutam
pranamraeshwae taeshu prasabham upayaa tasya bhavanam
bhavasya abhyutthaanae tava parijanoktir wijayatae. 29

"தேவி பரமசிவனை வரவேற்கும் வைபவம்"  [ப்ரஸவாரிஷ்ட நிவ்ருத்தி, மூர்க்கரை வசப்படுத்துதல்] 

கிரீடம் வைரிஞ்சம் பரிஹர புர: கைடபபித:
கடோரே கோடோரே ஸ்கலஸி ஜஹி ஜம்பாரி-மகுடம்
ப்ரேணம்ரேஷ்வேதேஷு ப்ரஸப-முபயாதஸ்ய பவனம்
பவஸ்யாப்யுத்தானே தவ பரிஜனோக்திர்-விஜயதேI

O! Mother! “Watch out, theres the crown of Brahma near your feet. Be carefuln front! You may trip on the hard crown of Vishnu (Kaitabhabhida)! Carefully avoid the crown ofndra (Jambhari)!” - May such cautionary words of your retinue triumph, when youmpetuously (suddenlyn haste) risen honour of Bhava (Your Lord Siva), who approaches your palace, when these gods are paying their obeisance to You. 29

Entering into another body 

swadaehod bootaabhir ghranibhir animaadwaabhir abhitah
nishaevyae nityae twaam ahamti sadaa bhaavayati yah
kim aascharyam tasya trinayana samriddim trunayatah
mahaa samvarta agnir wirachayati neeraajana vidhim. 30


"தேவியைத் தனது ஆத்மாவாக உபாசித்தல்" [பராகாயப் பிரவேசம்] 

ஸ்வேதேஹோத்பூதாபிர்-க்ருணிபி-ரணிமத்யாபி-ரபிதோ
நிஷேவ்யே நித்யே த்வா-மஹமிதி ஸதா பாவயதி ய:
கிமாச்சர்யம் தஸ்ய த்ரிநயன-ஸம்ருத்திம் த்ருணயதோ
மஹாஸவர்த்தாக்னிர்-விரசயதி நீராஜன-விதிம்I

O! What a wonder! O Mother! Worthy of all adoration! Oh the Eternal One! He who constantly meditates on Thee, as the manifestation of the Anima etc., eight siddhis generated from Thy own body, and contemplates on You, merging himself with Thee, - He (such a devotee) considers the wealth of absorptionnto Siva as equivalent, but, to a piece of straw. To him the great fire of dissolution by You will appear as the Harati (neerajanam or the ceremony of waving lightsn worship). 30
