Hanuman Chalisa

 श्री हनुमान चालीसा 

    The Hanuman Chalisa is more than a prayer describing Hanuman's extraordinary strength. It presents Hanuman as an ideal of wisdom, courage, humility, loyalty, selfless service, and complete devotion to Lord Rama.

His physical strength represents courage.

His wisdom represents right understanding.

His service to Rama represents selflessness.

His humility represents freedom from ego.

His devotion represents complete surrender to the divine.

श्री गुरु चरन सरोज रज निजमनु मुकुरु सुधारि ।

बरनऊ रघुबर बिमल जसु जो दायकु फल चारि ॥

Shri guru charan saroj raj, Nij manu mukur sudhare |

Barnau raghubar bimal jasu, Jo dhayak phal chare ||

    The devotee begins by remembering the Guru with humility and seeks to cleanse the mind of impurities. With a purified heart, the devotee praises the pure and noble glory of Lord Rama, whose teachings lead toward the four great aims of life: righteousness, prosperity, fulfillment, and spiritual liberation.

बुद्धिहीन ननु जानिके सुमिरौ पवन कुमार ।

बल बुद्धि विद्या देहु मोहि हरहु कलेस बिकार् ॥

Budhihien tanu jaanke, Sumerao pavan-kumar |

Bal budhi vidhya dehu mohe, Harhu kales bikar ||

    Recognizing one's own limitations, the devotee turns to Hanuman with humility. The prayer asks him to bless the devotee with physical and inner strength, wisdom, knowledge, and the ability to overcome suffering, confusion, and negative tendencies.

चौपाई (Chopai)

जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुण सागर ।

जय कपीश तिहु लोक उजागर ॥ 1 ॥

Jai hanuman gyan gun sagar |

Jai kapise tehu lok ujagar || 1 ||

    Hanuman is praised as an ocean of knowledge, wisdom, courage, and noble qualities. His greatness and divine virtues shine throughout the three worlds, making him an inspiration for those who seek strength guided by goodness.

रामदूत अतुलित बलधामा ।

अञ्जनि पुत्र पवनसुत नामा ॥ 2 ॥

Ram dut atulit bal dhama |

Anjani putra pavan sut nama || 2 ||

    Hanuman is the devoted messenger of Lord Rama and possesses immeasurable strength. He is lovingly known as the son of Anjana and as Pavanputra, the son of Vayu, representing divine energy and power.

महावीर विक्रम बजरङ्गी ।

कुमति निवार सुमति के सङ्गी ॥3 ॥

Mahabir bikram bajragee |

Kumati nivas sumati ke sangi || 3 ||

    Hanuman is the great and fearless hero whose strength is compared with the power of the thunderbolt. He removes harmful thoughts and inspires clarity, wisdom, good judgment, and righteous thinking.

कञ्चन वरण विराज सुवेशा ।

कानन कुण्डल कुञ्चित केशा ॥ 4 ॥

Kanchan baran biraj subesa |

Kann kundal kunchit kesa || 4 ||

    Hanuman is described as radiant like pure gold and beautifully adorned. His ornaments, earrings, and curly hair enhance his majestic divine appearance.

हाथवज्र औ ध्वजा विराजै ।

कान्थे मूञ्ज जनेऊ साजै ॥ 5॥

Haat vajar ao dheja biraje |

Kandhe muj janeu sajee || 5 ||

    Hanuman carries powerful symbols representing courage, protection, and divine strength. The sacred thread resting on his shoulder also represents spiritual discipline and his connection with sacred duty.

शङ्कर सुवन केसरी नन्दन ।

तेज प्रताप महाजग वन्दन ॥ 6 ॥

Sankar suvan kesrinandan |

Tej pratap maha jag bandhan || 6 ||

    Hanuman is associated with Lord Shiva and is the son of Kesari. His extraordinary radiance, courage, and divine glory have made him worthy of reverence throughout the world.

विद्यावान गुणी अति चातुर ।

राम काज करिवे को आतुर ॥ 7 ॥

Vidhyavan gune aati chatur |

Ram kaaj karive ko aatur || 7 ||

    Hanuman possesses great knowledge, wisdom, virtue, and intelligence. Yet he remains humble, always eager to use his abilities in service of Lord Rama and to fulfill his responsibilities.

प्रभु चरित्र सुनिवे को रसिया ।

रामलखन सीता मन बसिया ॥ 8॥

Prabhu charit sunibe ko rasiya |

Ram lakhan sita maan basiya || 8 ||

    Hanuman takes deep joy in hearing and remembering the divine deeds of Lord Rama. Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita live within his heart, reflecting his complete and unwavering devotion.

सूक्ष्म रूपधरि सियहिं दिखावा ।

विकट रूपधरि लङ्क जरावा ॥ 9 ॥

Susham roop dhari siyahi dhikhava |

Bikat roop dhari lank jarava || 9 ||

    Hanuman showed great wisdom by becoming small and gentle when he approached Sita. When the time came to confront injustice, he assumed a formidable form and demonstrated his immense power in Lanka.

भीम रूपधरि असुर संहारे ।

रामचन्द्र के काज संवारे ॥ 10 ॥

Bhim roop dhari asur sahare |

Ramchandra ke kaaj savare || 10 ||

    When confronted by powerful forces of evil, Hanuman displayed his mighty form and defeated them. Through his courage, intelligence, and devotion, he successfully carried out the missions entrusted to him by Lord Rama.

लाय सञ्जीवन लखन जियाये ।

श्री रघुवीर हरषि उर लाये ॥ 11 ॥

Laye sanjeevan lakhan jiyaye |

Shriraghuvir harsha ure laye || 11 ||

    When Lakshmana's life was in danger, Hanuman undertook the difficult mission of bringing the life-restoring Sanjeevani. His devotion and determination brought immense joy to Lord Rama, who embraced him with love and gratitude.

रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बडाई ।

तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई ॥ 12 ॥

Raghupati kinhe bahut badai |

Tum mam preye bharathisam bhai || 12 ||

    Lord Rama expressed profound appreciation for Hanuman's devotion and service. Rama regarded Hanuman as deeply dear to him, comparing his place in his heart to that of his beloved brother Bharata.

सहस वदन तुम्हरो जास गावै ।

अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावै ॥ 13 ॥

Sahas badana tumarho jas gavey |

Aas kahi shripati kant lagavey || 13 ||

    Lord Rama praises Hanuman's greatness by saying that even a thousand tongues would struggle to fully express his glory. With such affection and appreciation, Rama embraces Hanuman.

सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीशा ।

नारद शारद सहित अहीशा ॥ 14 ॥

Sanakadika bhramadhi munisa |

Narad sarad sahit ahisa || 14 ||

    The verse describes Hanuman's glory as being praised by great sages, divine beings, and celestial figures. His spiritual greatness is portrayed as worthy of admiration even among the highest realms of divine knowledge.

जम(यम) कुबेर दिगपाल जहां ते ।

कवि कोविद कहि सके कहां ते ॥ 15 ॥

Jam kuber digpal jaha the |

Kavi kovid kahi sake kaha the || 15 ||

    Even powerful divine guardians and highly learned poets and scholars cannot completely express the greatness of Hanuman. His virtues and glory are presented as too vast to be captured fully in words.

तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहि कीन्हा ।

राम मिलाय राजपद दीन्हा ॥ 16 ॥

Tum upkar sugrivahim kehina |

Ram milaye raj pad denha || 16 ||

    Hanuman played an important role in bringing Sugriva into contact with Lord Rama. Through this divine connection, Sugriva was able to regain his rightful position and kingdom.

तुम्हरो मन्त्र विभीषण माना ।

लङ्केश्वर भए सब जग जाना ॥ 17 ॥

Tumraho mantra vibhishana mana |

Lankeshvar bhaye sab jag jaan || 17 ||

    Vibhishana accepted Hanuman's wise guidance and chose the path of righteousness. His loyalty to dharma ultimately led to his becoming the ruler of Lanka.

युग सहस्र योजन पर भानू ।

लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू ॥ 18 ॥

Jug sahes jojan per bhanu |

Linyo tahi madhur phal janu || 18 ||

    As a child, Hanuman saw the Sun shining in the sky and believed it to be a delicious fruit. His attempt to reach it illustrates the extraordinary energy and fearlessness he possessed from childhood.

प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माही ।

जलधि लाङ्घि गये अचरज नाही ॥ 19 ॥

Prabhu mudrika meli mukh mahi |

Jaldhi ladhi gaye acraj nahi || 19 ||

    Carrying Lord Rama's ring as a symbol of trust and purpose, Hanuman crossed the vast ocean in search of Sita. His unwavering devotion gave him the confidence to overcome an enormous obstacle.

दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते ।

सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते ॥ 20 ॥

Durgam kaaj jagat ke jete |

Sugam anugrah tumre tete || 20 ||

    Difficult tasks that appear impossible can become manageable through Hanuman's grace and inspiration. The verse expresses faith that devotion gives people the courage and determination to overcome obstacles.

राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे ।

होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे ॥ 21 ॥

Ram duaare tum rakhvare |

Hoot na aagya binu pasare || 21 ||

    Hanuman is regarded as the guardian of Lord Rama's divine presence. The verse expresses the belief that sincere devotion to Hanuman opens the way toward Rama and the spiritual path he represents.

सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी शरणा ।

तुम रक्षक काहू को डर ना ॥ 22 ॥

Sab sukh lahai tumhre sarna |

Tum rakshak kahu ko daarna || 22 ||

    Those who sincerely place their faith in Hanuman seek his protection, courage, and guidance. His presence gives devotees confidence to face life without being overwhelmed by fear.

आपन तेज तुम्हारो आपै ।

तीनों लोक हाङ्क ते काम्पै ॥ 23 ॥

Aapan tej samharo aape |

Teno lok hakte kape || 23 ||

    Hanuman possesses such immense power that only he can fully control and contain it. His mighty presence is described as powerful enough to make the three worlds tremble.

भूत पिशाच निकट नहि आवै ।

महवीर जब नाम सुनावै ॥ 24 ॥

Bhut pesach nikat nahi aaveh |

Mahavir jab naam sunaveh || 24 ||

    The verse expresses the traditional belief that remembrance of Hanuman drives away fear and negative influences. His name gives devotees a sense of spiritual protection and inner courage.

नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा ।

जपत निरन्तर हनुमत वीरा ॥ 25 ॥

Nase rog hare sab peera |

Japat nirantar hanumat bal bira || 25 ||

    Devotees traditionally turn to Hanuman when facing suffering and hardship. Repeated remembrance of his name represents faith, hope, courage, and the search for relief from life's difficulties.

सङ्कट तें(सें) हनुमान छुडावै ।

मन क्रम वचन ध्यान जो लावै ॥ 26 ॥

Sankat se hanuman chudave |

Maan kram bachan dayan jo lavey || 26 ||

    Those who remember Hanuman sincerely through their thoughts, actions, and words seek his guidance during difficult times. The verse emphasizes complete devotion—not merely remembering him in words, but bringing his values into everyday life.

सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा ।

तिनके काज सकल तुम साजा ॥ 27 ॥

Sab per ram tapasvi raja |

Tin ke kaaj sakal tum saja || 27 ||

    Lord Rama is honored as the righteous and spiritually disciplined king. Hanuman dedicates his extraordinary abilities to carrying out Rama's purposes and serving his divine mission.

और मनोरध जो कोइ लावै ।

सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै ॥ 28 ॥

Aur manorat jo kayi lave |

Tasuye amit jeevan phal pavey || 28 ||

    Devotees bring their sincere hopes and aspirations before Hanuman with faith. The verse expresses the spiritual belief that sincere devotion and righteous intentions can bring meaningful blessings and fulfillment.

चारो युग परिताप तुम्हारा ।

है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा ॥ 29 ॥

Charo yuj pratap tumarah |

Hai prasidh jagat ujiyara || 29 ||

    Hanuman's glory is celebrated across all four ages. His courage, devotion, and noble character continue to illuminate the lives of people who remember and follow his example.

साधु सन्त के तुम रखवारे ।

असुर निकन्दन राम दुलारे ॥ 30 ॥

Sadhu sant ke tum rakhvare |

Asur nikandan ram dulare || 30 ||

    Hanuman is revered as the protector of saints and righteous people and as a force against evil. His deep love and loyalty toward Lord Rama make him especially beloved to Rama.

अष्ठसिद्धि नौ(नव) निधि के दाता ।

अस वर दीन्ह जानकी माता ॥ 31 ॥

Ashat sidhi navnidhi ke data |

As var deen jaanki mata || 31 ||

    The verse recalls the blessing given to Hanuman by Mother Sita, through which he is traditionally regarded as capable of granting the eight spiritual powers and nine forms of divine treasure.

राम रसायन तुम्हारे पासा ।

साद रहो रघुपति के दासा ॥ 32 ॥

Ram rasayan tumhre pasa |

Sada raho raghupati ke dasa || 32 ||

    Hanuman possesses the pure essence of devotion to Lord Rama. His greatest identity is not his physical strength but his humble willingness to remain forever in Rama's service.

तुम्हरे भजन रामको पावै ।

जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै ॥ 33 ॥

Tumreh bhajan ram ko bhavey |

Janam janam ke dukh bisravey || 33 ||

    Devotion to Hanuman leads the heart toward Lord Rama. Through sincere spiritual practice, devotees seek freedom from deep-rooted suffering and move toward peace, devotion, and divine awareness.

अन्त काल रघुवर पुरजाई ।

जहां जन्म हरिभक्त कहाई ॥ 34 ॥

Ant kaal raghubar pur jaie |

Jaha janam hari bhagat kahaei || 34 ||

    The verse expresses the devotee's hope of attaining the divine presence of Lord Rama at the end of life. It also expresses the wish to remain connected with devotion to God throughout one's spiritual journey.

और देवता चित्त न धरई ।

हनुमत सेइ सर्व सुख करई ॥ 35 ॥

Aur devta chitna dhareyo |

Hanumat seye sarav sukh karaei || 35 ||

    This verse emphasizes wholehearted devotion. By placing sincere faith in Hanuman and following the path of devotion, a devotee seeks inner contentment, spiritual strength, and lasting peace.

सङ्कट कटै मिटै सब पीरा ।

जो सुमिरै हनुमत बल वीरा ॥ 36 ॥

Sankat kate mite sab pera |

Jo sumere hanumat balbira || 36 ||

    Those who remember the courageous Hanuman during difficult moments find strength to face their struggles. The verse expresses faith that devotion can help overcome fear, hardship, and inner pain.

जै जै जै हनुमान गोसाई ।

कृपा करो गुरुदेव की नाई ॥ 37 ॥

Jai jai jai hanuman gusai |

Kripa karo guru dev ke nai || 37 ||

    The devotee repeatedly praises Hanuman and asks him to shower compassion and guidance. Hanuman is approached not only as a powerful protector but also as a compassionate spiritual teacher.

जो शत वार पाठ कर कोई ।

छूटहि बन्दि महा सुख होई ॥ 38 ॥

Jo sat bar pat kar koi |

Chutehi bandhi maha sukh hoi || 38 ||

जो यह पडै हनुमान चालीसा ।

होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीशा ॥ 39 ॥

Hoye sidhi sa ke gauisa || 39 ||

तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा ।

    Tulsidas humbly describes himself as an eternal servant of Lord Hari. He then asks Hanuman to make his heart a permanent dwelling place, expressing the deepest form of devotion—humility, surrender, and constant remembrance of the divine.

दोहा (Doha)

पवन तनय सङ्कट हरण - मङ्गल मूरति रूप् ।

राम लखन सीता सहित - हृदय बसहु सुरभूप् ॥

Pavantnaye sankat haran, Mangal murti roop |

Ram lakhan sita sahet, Hridaye basau sur bhup ||

    O Hanuman, son of the divine Wind, you are revered as the remover of difficulties and an embodiment of auspiciousness. The devotee lovingly asks you to remain within the heart together with Lord Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita, so that devotion, courage, righteousness, and divine remembrance may always remain present in life.

    அமர்ந்த திருக்கோலத்தில் வீற்றிருந்துப் பக்தர்களுக்கு காட்சி தரும் பெருமாள், லட்சுமி ஹயகிரீவர் மற்றும் லட்சுமி நரசிம்மர் போன்ற தெய்வங்களை தரிசித்து, பாயாசம் மற்றும் கேசரி நைவேத்தியமாக அளித்தால், தொழில் மற்றும் வியாபாரத்தில் வளர்ச்சி, நிரந்தர வேலை வாய்ப்பு, மேலும் லட்சுமி கடாக்ஷம் பெருகும்.

    By having darshan of deities such as Perumal, Lakshmi Hayagriva, and Lakshmi Narasimha, who appear in a seated divine posture, and offering Payasam and Kesari as naivedyam, one will be blessed with growth in career and business, opportunities for permanent employment, and an increase in wealth and overall prosperity.

Ritual Reflections - 1

    By placing rock sugar in a clay lamp, pouring ghee, and lighting it on Fridays to worship the Navagraha planet Venus (Shukra), misunderstandings between husband and wife will be resolved.
