Hanuman Chalisa

    The Hanuman Chalisa is more than a prayer describing Hanuman's extraordinary strength. It presents Hanuman as an ideal of wisdom, courage, humility, loyalty, selfless service, and complete devotion to Lord Rama.

His physical strength represents courage.

His wisdom represents right understanding.

His service to Rama represents selflessness.

His humility represents freedom from ego.

His devotion represents complete surrender to the divine.

Shri guru charan saroj raj, Nij manu mukur sudhare |

Barnau raghubar bimal jasu, Jo dhayak phal chare ||

    The devotee begins by remembering the Guru with humility and seeks to cleanse the mind of impurities. With a purified heart, the devotee praises the pure and noble glory of Lord Rama, whose teachings lead toward the four great aims of life: righteousness, prosperity, fulfillment, and spiritual liberation.

Budhihien tanu jaanke, Sumerao pavan-kumar |

Bal budhi vidhya dehu mohe, Harhu kales bikar ||

    Recognizing one's own limitations, the devotee turns to Hanuman with humility. The prayer asks him to bless the devotee with physical and inner strength, wisdom, knowledge, and the ability to overcome suffering, confusion, and negative tendencies.

    Hanuman is praised as an ocean of knowledge, wisdom, courage, and noble qualities. His greatness and divine virtues shine throughout the three worlds, making him an inspiration for those who seek strength guided by goodness.

Ram dut atulit bal dhama |

Anjani putra pavan sut nama || 2 ||

    Hanuman is the devoted messenger of Lord Rama and possesses immeasurable strength. He is lovingly known as the son of Anjana and as Pavanputra, the son of Vayu, representing divine energy and power.

    Hanuman is the great and fearless hero whose strength is compared with the power of the thunderbolt. He removes harmful thoughts and inspires clarity, wisdom, good judgment, and righteous thinking.

Kanchan baran biraj subesa |

Kann kundal kunchit kesa || 4 ||

    Hanuman is described as radiant like pure gold and beautifully adorned. His ornaments, earrings, and curly hair enhance his majestic divine appearance.

рдХाрди्рдеे рдоूрдЮ्рдЬ рдЬрдиेрдК рд╕ाрдЬै ॥ 5॥

Haat vajar ao dheja biraje |

Kandhe muj janeu sajee || 5 ||

    Hanuman carries powerful symbols representing courage, protection, and divine strength. The sacred thread resting on his shoulder also represents spiritual discipline and his connection with sacred duty.

Sankar suvan kesrinandan |

Tej pratap maha jag bandhan || 6 ||

    Hanuman is associated with Lord Shiva and is the son of Kesari. His extraordinary radiance, courage, and divine glory have made him worthy of reverence throughout the world.

Vidhyavan gune aati chatur |

Ram kaaj karive ko aatur || 7 ||

    Hanuman possesses great knowledge, wisdom, virtue, and intelligence. Yet he remains humble, always eager to use his abilities in service of Lord Rama and to fulfill his responsibilities.

Prabhu charit sunibe ko rasiya |

    Hanuman takes deep joy in hearing and remembering the divine deeds of Lord Rama. Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita live within his heart, reflecting his complete and unwavering devotion.

Susham roop dhari siyahi dhikhava |

Bikat roop dhari lank jarava || 9 ||

    Hanuman showed great wisdom by becoming small and gentle when he approached Sita. When the time came to confront injustice, he assumed a formidable form and demonstrated his immense power in Lanka.

рд░ाрдордЪрди्рдж्рд░ рдХे рдХाрдЬ рд╕ंрд╡ाрд░े ॥ 10 ॥

Bhim roop dhari asur sahare |

Ramchandra ke kaaj savare || 10 ||

    When confronted by powerful forces of evil, Hanuman displayed his mighty form and defeated them. Through his courage, intelligence, and devotion, he successfully carried out the missions entrusted to him by Lord Rama.

Laye sanjeevan lakhan jiyaye |

Shriraghuvir harsha ure laye || 11 ||

    When Lakshmana's life was in danger, Hanuman undertook the difficult mission of bringing the life-restoring Sanjeevani. His devotion and determination brought immense joy to Lord Rama, who embraced him with love and gratitude.

рддुрдо рдордо рдк्рд░िрдп рднрд░рддрд╣ि рд╕рдо рднाрдИ ॥ 12 ॥

Raghupati kinhe bahut badai |

Tum mam preye bharathisam bhai || 12 ||

    Lord Rama expressed profound appreciation for Hanuman's devotion and service. Rama regarded Hanuman as deeply dear to him, comparing his place in his heart to that of his beloved brother Bharata.

Sahas badana tumarho jas gavey |

Aas kahi shripati kant lagavey || 13 ||

    Lord Rama praises Hanuman's greatness by saying that even a thousand tongues would struggle to fully express his glory. With such affection and appreciation, Rama embraces Hanuman.

рдиाрд░рдж рд╢ाрд░рдж рд╕рд╣िрдд рдЕрд╣ीрд╢ा ॥ 14 ॥

Sanakadika bhramadhi munisa |

Narad sarad sahit ahisa || 14 ||

    The verse describes Hanuman's glory as being praised by great sages, divine beings, and celestial figures. His spiritual greatness is portrayed as worthy of admiration even among the highest realms of divine knowledge.

Jam kuber digpal jaha the |

Kavi kovid kahi sake kaha the || 15 ||

    Even powerful divine guardians and highly learned poets and scholars cannot completely express the greatness of Hanuman. His virtues and glory are presented as too vast to be captured fully in words.


рддुрдо рдЙрдкрдХाрд░ рд╕ुрдЧ्рд░ीрд╡рд╣ि рдХीрди्рд╣ा ।

рд░ाрдо рдоिрд▓ाрдп рд░ाрдЬрдкрдж рджीрди्рд╣ा ॥ 16 ॥

Tum upkar sugrivahim kehina |

Ram milaye raj pad denha || 16 ||

    Hanuman played an important role in bringing Sugriva into contact with Lord Rama. Through this divine connection, Sugriva was able to regain his rightful position and kingdom.


рддुрдо्рд╣рд░ो рдорди्рдд्рд░ рд╡िрднीрд╖рдг рдоाрдиा ।

рд▓рдЩ्рдХेрд╢्рд╡рд░ рднрдП рд╕рдм рдЬрдЧ рдЬाрдиा ॥ 17 ॥

Tumraho mantra vibhishana mana |

Lankeshvar bhaye sab jag jaan || 17 ||

    Vibhishana accepted Hanuman's wise guidance and chose the path of righteousness. His loyalty to dharma ultimately led to his becoming the ruler of Lanka.


рдпुрдЧ рд╕рд╣рд╕्рд░ рдпोрдЬрди рдкрд░ рднाрдиू ।

рд▓ीрд▓्рдпो рддाрд╣ि рдордзुрд░ рдлрд▓ рдЬाрдиू ॥ 18 ॥

Jug sahes jojan per bhanu |

Linyo tahi madhur phal janu || 18 ||

    As a child, Hanuman saw the Sun shining in the sky and believed it to be a delicious fruit. His attempt to reach it illustrates the extraordinary energy and fearlessness he possessed from childhood.


рдк्рд░рднु рдоुрдж्рд░िрдХा рдоेрд▓ि рдоुрдЦ рдоाрд╣ी ।

рдЬрд▓рдзि рд▓ाрдЩ्рдШि рдЧрдпे рдЕрдЪрд░рдЬ рдиाрд╣ी ॥ 19 ॥

Prabhu mudrika meli mukh mahi |

Jaldhi ladhi gaye acraj nahi || 19 ||

    Carrying Lord Rama's ring as a symbol of trust and purpose, Hanuman crossed the vast ocean in search of Sita. His unwavering devotion gave him the confidence to overcome an enormous obstacle.

Durgam kaaj jagat ke jete |

Sugam anugrah tumre tete || 20 ||

Ram duaare tum rakhvare |

Sab sukh lahai tumhre sarna |

Aapan tej samharo aape |

Teno lok hakte kape || 23 ||

Bhut pesach nikat nahi aaveh |

Mahavir jab naam sunaveh || 24 ||

Sab per ram tapasvi raja |

Tin ke kaaj sakal tum saja || 27 ||

Aur manorat jo kayi lave |

Sadhu sant ke tum rakhvare |

Asur nikandan ram dulare || 30 ||

Tumreh bhajan ram ko bhavey |

Janam janam ke dukh bisravey || 33 ||

Ant kaal raghubar pur jaie |

Jo sat bar pat kar koi |

Ram lakhan sita sahet, Hridaye basau sur bhup ||

    O Hanuman, son of the divine Wind, you are revered as the remover of difficulties and an embodiment of auspiciousness.
