Garuda Panchami is a sacred Hindu festival dedicated to Bhagavan Garuda, the divine vehicle (Vahana) of Bhagavan Vishnu and the king of birds. The festival is traditionally observed on Shukla Panchami, the fifth lunar day of the waxing fortnight, during the month of Shravana. In Tamil tradition, it is associated with the month of Aadi.

The Birth of Garuda
According to Hindu tradition, Sage Kashyapa had two wives, Kadru and Vinata. Kadru desired a thousand sons and was blessed with a thousand serpent children. Vinata, wishing for powerful and extraordinary children, asked for two sons.
Vinata received two eggs. However, she became impatient when the eggs did not hatch for a long time. In her impatience, she broke open one of them. From it was born Aruna, but his body was not yet fully developed. Aruna later became associated with Surya Bhagavan as his charioteer. Vinata waited patiently for the second egg. After a long period, the egg finally opened, and Garuda was born with magnificent wings and extraordinary strength.
Garuda's Devotion and Courage
Garuda learned that his mother, Vinata, had become enslaved because of a difficult circumstance involving Kadru and her serpent sons. Determined to free his mother, Garuda undertook an extraordinary quest. The serpent beings demanded Amrita, the nectar of immortality, as the price for Vinata's freedom. Garuda therefore journeyed to the celestial realm and faced numerous challenges.
With his immense strength, courage and determination, Garuda overcame the obstacles and obtained the Amrita Kalasha. His purpose was not personal wealth or power. His goal was simple: To free his mother. This makes Garuda a powerful symbol of filial devotion, courage and selfless determination.
